The New York Times: In Search of Mexican Pizza

When Eva and Valentín opened their pizzeria in South Philadelphia, they knew they wanted to include their own signature pies. “My parents wanted that unique selling point that would make them stick out, but also could still keep their community coming back and feeling identified,” says their daughter Jacquelyn Palillero who works as a pastry chef in Center City. Her father “wanted to keep the nostalgic feeling of a taco.”

While Mexican pizza is not unique to Philadelphia, the combination of a growing Mexican community in what was once the Italian neighborhood within a foodie city has made Philadelphia’s Mexican food scene stand out.
