  • Eighty miles south of Graceland and a step back in time, Shankerman’s Men’s Wear Store and its owner Floyd Shankerman, 79, are an inseparable part of Clarksdale, Mississippi’s history and a vestige of another era. Shankerman is known for his tuxedos as well as his tunes — a purveyor of fashions of the bygone Mad Men days and a talented singer of Elvis ballads. But he’s also a symbol of progress in Clarksdale, having long brought together people from different generations, religions and races at his store

  • A store clerk in a Syrian grocery store awaits his customers in the Fatih district of Istanbul, Turkey. Fatih is home to one of the largest Syrian refugee communities in Turkey and has transformed the area into a vibrant community with shops, bookstores and restaurants of all kinds. The new Fatih underscores Syrian refugees' refusal to let adversity and the heartbreak of war prevent them from living normal lives -- And this Istanbul district is the better for it.

  • On a steep side street that meanders away from Istanbul's bustling main shopping street the Istiklal, Nurhan Acun, 86, has been making jewelry by hand in the style of historically Byzantine and Ottoman designs for over thirty years. As chain stores proliferate on the Istiklal, Acun's gallery is one of only a handful of locally owned shops here to have survived rising rents and changing consumer tastes.
